KRTU’s weekly, mid-day program

Feb 5 - Feb 9

约翰卡特 & Bobby Bradford: From Texas to California
Trumpeter and bandleader Bobby Bradford met multi-instrumentalist 约翰卡特 on the West Coast in the mid 1960's, but the pair had a connection to sounds birthed over a decade prior in Texas with Ornette Coleman, Charles Moffett, and the creation of the free jazz movement. Carter and Bradford created tighty constructed, daring music rooted in bebop's lyricism while slyly crossing the lines of demarcation. Improvisation of the highest order from Carter and Bradford, all this week on the Jazz Break at Noon.

Feb 12 - Feb 16

Wardell Gray: Out of Nowhere
The story of bebop is incomplete without proper acknowledgment of Wardell Gray. Saxophone master of swing Gray was born February 13, 1921, in Oklahoma City, OK, raised on music in Detroit, MI, and arrived on Central Avenue in Los Angeles, CA, just in time for the post-war, live jazz boom on the storied street. Gray borrowed from Lester Young and blossomed with Dexter Gordon, Count Basie and Benny Goodman. Gray's life was cut short in 1955 but his timeless recordings are cherished and remembered, this week on the Jazz Break at Noon

Feb 19 - Feb 23

Nina Simone: Controversial and Captivating
Born February 21, 1933, 在泰伦, NC, vocalist and pianist Nina Simone studied mostly classical music at Juilliard in New York, before establishing her indefinable career as an artist of many musical art forms rooted in jazz and the blues. 本周, we'll hear Simone on early recordings for the Bethlehem, Colpix, and Phillips record labels, with later selections from her first career-spanning box set "To Be Free: The Nina Simone Story," all this week on the Jazz Break at Noon.

Feb 26 - Mar 1

Woody Shaw: Innovation and Exploration
Trumpeter and bandleader Woody Shaw wrote his own harmonic language using notes outside the chords, with wide intervals and a technique later embraced by the so-called 'young lions' of the 1990's. Shaw's earliest recordings date back to 1965, and we'll start there before moving through the prolific 1970's and beyond, with works from one of the artform's most underappreciated, 有天赋的, and well-traveled composers and bandleaders. Complexities and powerhouse playing from Woody Shaw, all this week on the Jazz Break at Noon.
