Remembering Trumpeter Ron Miles
Born May 9, 1963, in Indianapolis, IN, trumpeter, cornetist, and composer Ron Miles rose to prominence in Denver, CO. Miles' often lyrical and biting, sometimes contemplative and dreamy, sound can be heard on his many albums as a leader and with guitarist Bill Frisell. Miles died in 2022 at the age of 58 from a rare form of blood cancer. This week, Blue Note Records will release the live recording Old Main Chapel to honor the beloved trumpeter, and we'll preview tracks from it, and more from Miles, all this week on the Jazz Break at Noon.

May 13 - 17

The Individualism of Gil Evans
The works of master orchestrator, composer, and bandleader Gil Evans are vast and varied in sound and style. Born Gilmore Ian Ernest Green on May 13, 1921, in Toronto, Ontario, 加拿大, Evans' collaborations with icon Miles Davis stand out as some of his finest material. But further review of Evans' large discography points to multiple strokes of genius in a catalog extending from the early 1940's to his final stages in the late 1980's. The individualism of Gil Evans, all this week on the Jazz Break at Noon.

May 20 - 24

The Legacy of Sun Ra and the Arkestra
This week, we'll journey through early jazz forms in swing and bebop to the outer reaches of improvised music with the futuristic sounds of bandleader Herman Poole Blount, aka Sun Ra. Following Ra's departure from planet Earth, former members of the Arkestra carry on the enigmatic bandleader's legacy, and we'll hear select recordings from some of them including Marshall Allen, June Tyson, John Gilmore, and Tyler Mitchell.

May 27 - 31

Christian McBride: Then & 现在
Bassist, educator, radio host, and eight-time Grammy winner Christian McBride grew out of the group of so-called 'young lions' of the late 1980's to become one of the music's true ambassadors. Born May 31, 1972, in Philadelphia, PA, McBride's immaculate sound and impeccable timing is adored by listeners and fellow musicians far and wide. We'l hear the many multitudes of McBride, all this week on the Jazz Break at Noon.
